love sees only beauty (reprise)

love looks at a filthy
broken down bum
and sees the golden baby boy
laughing once in his mother’s arms

love looks at the instrument
of its own destruction
and sees only the most desirable
woman in the world

love looks at the leper
and sees pain
bewilderment
loneliness, loss

if it sees anything other than beauty
to accuse or despise
feels any shred of repulsion
anything, anything other than

selfish
personal
encompassing
absolutely real desire

to get closer
admire its unique genius
humbly learn the lessons
it paid the terrible price now to teach

and repay this priceless gift
with whatever it may be
it has to offer
shelter medicine meals tea sympathy…

then though perhaps a superior motive
pity, say, interest, wish to contribute
or much greater than all of these even
compassion

it falls short, it
falls short of love.

A poet is the strangest sort of soul
You in this life may e'er expect to meet
More broken even while more truly whole,
Innocently intending well, more sweet

Than any but a five year old should be
Unfit to meet a callused world's demand
Or to behave aught expediently
All grace in flight; an albatross on land

Do not the all too common error make
Do not fall into the too easy trap
Avoid the fatal egoic mistake
Imagining that poet be a sap

Powerful spirits classic and antique
Give voice when poets ope their mouths to speak
