Two Kinds of Anger

Two kinds of anger side by side exist
In this our fallen material world
‘Tis we decide to which one we will list
And by it into which universe hurled

Do we feel anger something bad about
And righteous urge that something to correct
Some ease for other victims bring about?
Then ’tis to God within that we connect

But ‘ware! To fall from that corrective hight
Allowing ourselves baser rage to feel
Against another — they wrong and we right
Is to have disconnected from the real

And fallen into sin fully as deep
As that which any perpetrator know
Forgetting promises we didn’t keep
Times when our moral code we fell below

And when that code itself mockery made
Of all our gentle savior had to say
Our pridefullness one humbler hath unmade
For our joys someone else’s sorrows pay

We none of us can live here without fault
You are no better than a blade of grass
No more a blessing than a grain of salt
Raging within your house of sheerest glass

A poet is the strangest sort of soul
You in this life may e'er expect to meet
More broken even while more truly whole,
Innocently intending well, more sweet

Than any but a five year old should be
Unfit to meet a callused world's demand
Or to behave aught expediently
All grace in flight; an albatross on land

Do not the all too common error make
Do not fall into the too easy trap
Avoid the fatal egoic mistake
Imagining that poet be a sap

Powerful spirits classic and antique
Give voice when poets ope their mouths to speak
