Pope Francis Makes a Pastoral Visit To Dublin, Ireland

The clergy and welcoming party of Catholics were at the airport to see Pope Francis arrive.  At the airport he  didn’t kiss the ground like the late Pope John Paul II, on he went to the President’s house and then Dublin Castle.  The clergy, lay people, dignitaries and foreign diplomats were among the guests in Dublin Castle.  In a speech to the Pope, Leo Varadkar the Irish Prime Minister told him victims were still suffering from the atrocities by the priests and nuns.   He asked the Pope to use his position for truth and honesty and justice to be brought to lead in exposing the whole saga in Ireland and around the world and dealing with the priests who committed those crimes on  children and women.  He called for a new relationship between the church and the state in which religion was no  longer the central factor of society.

Pope Francis in his reply, he spoke of his “shame” over the “grave scandal” of the child sexual abuse and the “outrage” justified for ” the failure of the ecclesiastical authorities -bishops, religious superiors priests and others,  adequately to address these appalling crimes………..”  After this event the Pope stopped at a community devastated by social ills of poverty, drugs, violence and unemployment as well as an elderly care facility.
