Professionals And Patient Groups Protest -East London NHS Trust Wants All Patients To Prove Right To Free Care
Running five hospitals in east London is no mean feat, but the Barts NHS Trust appears to be running an “immigration checkpoint”are to collect money from people it deems to be on “health tourism.” It is asking people to prove they have lived here in the last 12 months and is seeking help from the Home Office by putting through 100 enquiries a week. A GP in the area is afraid people will be afraid to come forward for the care they need and this is dangerous as the people are in deprived communities. Campaigners from the North-East London Save Our NHS group have set their own mock “immigration checkpoint.” 600 activists have signed a letter asking for the checkpoints to be suspended. Barts said that for many years it had asked patients coming to the AE and the maternity departments where they had live in the last 12 months. Now they want to roll it out to all departments. The Trust posted a £109 million deficit and is cost £13 million to treat ineligible people.
