A Warrior in Prayer
I had intended to return to the series about the Left’s war on science this week.
Last week’s post was an interruption in that series. Part four will be coming soon, so be watching!
I have heard that the late Andrew Breitbart once stated that ‘politics is downstream from culture.’ If he is correct, the latest public display of vitriol by the Left is cause for serious alarm.
The fact is that the West is in a life and death struggle, a cultural war, which has dire consequences should the adversaries triumph. The question is, ‘How can such a triumph be avoided and the tide of this war be turned?’
I believe the solution comes in three phases, realization, comprehension and mobilization. First comes the opening of eyes, the realization that the Left has launched a cultural blitzkrieg against the West, and they’re not alone.
Realization: The Cultural Blitzkrieg
The first step is to realize the nature of the enemies of the West. Because there are two main opponents to be reckoned with, the leftists and Islamists.
It has become clear that Western culture is under attack by the Left in every arena. Moreover, the intensity and speed of this attack are accelerating at a rapid rate.
It is much like the initial attacks from Nazi Germany in 1939. A blitzkrieg is being launched against the values of the West by the Socialist Left.
The Left is aided in this campaign by a strange ally, militant Islam. Militant Islam is itself at war with the West and any culture which will not submit to Muslim rule.
This blitz is being waged by both groups against a common enemy, the West especially as expressed by America. The next piece needed to counter this is comprehension of the tactics employed by the enemies.
Comprehension: Enemy Tactics in the Culture War
Blitzkrieg is of German origin and the word literally means “lightning war.” It was introduced in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland with overwhelming forces in a surprise attack.
The tactic was stunningly successful. So much so that scarcely two years later Germany had conquered almost all of Continental Europe and was poised to invade Great Britain.
Both the Left and Militant Islam have used tactics similar to the “blitz” in the current cultural battles. This has borne much fruit for their aim to dismantle the West.
Both groups have prepared for their assaults in a manner comparable to the Nazi military machine. The first step then was to build sufficient forces which could move rapidly to ensure victory.
The Left began its campaign decades ago in America by infiltrating the public education system. Since leftist philosophy is atheistic the key to accomplishing this was to remove anything in public education favoring reliance upon God.
This was achieved back in 1962 with two Supreme Court rulings.
On June 25, 1962, the United States Supreme Court decided in Engel v. Vitale that a prayer approved by the New York Board of Regents for use in schools violated the First Amendment by constituting an establishment of religion. The following year, in Abington School District v. Schempp, the Court disallowed Bible readings in public schools for similar reasons.
The removal of prayer and Bible reading in schools has fostered terrible consequences. This video is more than a decade old, yet no one would suggest things are better today in America.
Through the education system, the Left has built a substantial crop of soldiers for Socialism over the last 55 years.
The Islamic tactics in the war against the West begin with the infiltration of the culture through immigration. Immigration became the maneuver to build up the needed forces for their own brand of “the blitz.”
One other factor unites the Left with radical Islam. Wittingly or not, leftists in Western nations have opened up the floodgates for Muslim immigration.
The consequences of allowing mass immigration of particularly Islamic origin is felt keenly in Europe today. It has resulted in:
chaos in Europe, including jihad attacks, Muslim rape gangs, attacks on women, no-go zones and Sharia patrols, the rise in anti-Semitism that even Angela Merkel attributes “to people of Arab origin,”
The cultural atmosphere favoring Islamic mass migration is now reflected in European law. In some places, if one is critical of this they can be legally considered mentally ill and ordered to be psychologically evaluated.
Until the current presidency, the immigration policies of the United States were headed in the same direction. Even so, in certain areas, the beginnings of a Muslim ‘blitz’ are being seen.
The state of Minnesota has the largest Muslim population in America. A recent near-riot at a public event there is one example of many demonstrating the rise of Islamofascism.
…violent fights erupted during Law enforcement appreciation day when the park was full of police officers and other members of law enforcement who received discounted tickets so that their families could enjoy the amusement park. An estimated 263 police officers responded to the fights inside the park, according to witnesses. “This looked like a targeted attack on law enforcement,” Hallberg added.
The response of local officials in Shakopee, MN, and the media was to avoid mentioning the Somali Muslim connection to this disturbance.
Moreover, just over two years ago an ISIS-inspired knife attack in a central Minnesota mall received national attention. This man was also a Somali Muslim ‘refugee.’
Mobilization: A Strong and Righteous Counter-attack
Leftists and Islamists are both poised to launch blitzkrieg-type assaults on Western society. The forces are in place almost everywhere including the United States.
Australia, the European Union, South Korea and especially Israel are also key states where the West is targeted by these hostile forces.
The question is, ‘How can this be turned back?’ How are these destructive and hostile camps to be dealt with effectively?
What must be understood especially by those who follow Christ is that we are engaged in more than a physical struggle. We are involved in far more than a culture war.
God’s Word reveals that our society is most of all in a spiritual war.
For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 2 Corinthians 10:4 [ESV]
Perhaps the most powerful spiritual weapon is often the least used. That is the weapon of prayer.
The Powerful Weapon of Prayer
I was a pastor for 20 years. Before that, I was involved in a men’s prayer group at our local church. Much to my chagrin, getting groups together to pray was a most difficult task.
I have heard it said that if you really wanted a church to yourself on Wednesday night, just announce a prayer meeting and you will get your wish. Sadly that is almost always true.
However, I also discovered that sincere prayer works. However, I don’t believe it works because ‘prayer changes things,’ as the saying goes.
It works because prayer changes us. It forces our attention beyond a list of requests to an encounter with God, and that is life-changing and miracle-working.
There is an abundance of evidence to support this, enough to fill entire volumes throughout the history of Christianity. A remarkable example of this is the story of George Mueller, who ran an orphanage solely using the power of prayer.
“The children are dressed and ready for school. But there is no food for them to eat,” the housemother of the orphanage informed George Mueller. George asked her to take the 300 children into the dining room and have them sit at the tables. He thanked God for the food and waited. George knew God would provide food for the children as he always did. Within minutes, a baker knocked on the door. “Mr. Mueller,” he said, “last night I could not sleep. Somehow I knew that you would need bread this morning. I got up and baked three batches for you. I will bring it in.” Soon, there was another knock at the door. It was the milkman. His cart had broken down in front of the orphanage. The milk would spoil by the time the wheel was fixed. He asked George if he could use some free milk. George smiled as the milkman brought in ten large cans of milk. It was just enough for the 300 thirsty children.
Mueller’s orphanage literally ran on this kind of schedule, and that example was the norm. Whatever was needed was prayed for and God provided it.
This began in 1836 and continued for almost 60 years. In that time over 10,000 orphans were cared for and 3,000 of them became ardent followers of Jesus.
A Modern Example of Prayer Power: 40 Days for Life
There is a modern example of a prayer campaign against abortion known as 40 Days for Life. The following video explains the power of prayer in this struggle and how it has been working.
The campaign began in College Station, Texas in 1998 and went nationwide in 2007. I have participated with other Christian brothers and sisters in local 40 Days for Life.
We pray in shifts at the entrance to the Planned Parenthood clinic every hour of every day for 40 days. That is the goal at all 40 Days campaigns.
Today, this remarkable prayer power spans the globe.
Hundreds of cities in dozens of countries across all six populated continents have now hosted 40 Days for Life campaigns. …Many cultures. Many time zones. Many languages. But one shared language of prayer.
The results have been stunning, to say the least. Since the campaign became national,
40 Days for Life participants report 14,636 lives saved from abortion during a campaign. That’s the type of impact that led an ACLU spokesperson to describe 40 Days for Life as the “greatest threat to choice.”
Almost 100 abortion clinics have closed their doors because of 40 Days prayer warriors. Moreover, at last count 172 abortion workers have come to Christ, left their jobs and are now pro-life.
Faithful Prayer is Critical
Focused, determined petitioning of God is critical in today’s world. We have noted the threats from Islamists and leftists against the West.
The damage already done by these adversaries is significant. But it can be repaired and the enemies defeated if we start by connecting with the Lord, and keeping our leaders strong and wise through prayer.
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. I Timothy 2:1,2 [ESV]
America is fast approaching an important mid-term election. I believe it is a duty for Americans and especially Christians to vote.
Yet, if we do not reach out to our Lord in prayer for His help and guidance voting is useless. Moreover, if we do not pray for our nation and her leaders we are relying on the unsteady wisdom of men to rule without His aid.
America’s founders realized this early during the birth pangs of the nation. One such point of crisis came during the forming of the Constitution.
The 1787 Constitutional Convention became deadlocked over how states were to be represented. The dispute was so harsh it seemed as if the Convention would fail.
No one could see any solution until delegate Ben Franklin stood up and spoke.
We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. …I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel …I therefore beg leave to move that, henceforth, prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven and its blessing on our deliberation be held in this assembly every morning before we proceed to business.
According to authors Peter Marshall and David Manuel, that speech was the factor which caused the delegates to strive with unity and complete the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
There is no better way to begin a nation than with dependence upon the Lord. We as believers need to be the first to recapture that discipline in our lives, our churches, and for America and the world.
