Pope Francis In Today’s General Audience On The Sixth Commandment

Pope Francis said, “You can’t love only when its convenient” when teaching on “Thou shall not commit adultery,” which he explains as a call to fidelity and loyalty in relationships.  Where there is true love, fidelity naturally would be a characteristic of it showing a “free mature responsible human relationship.”  This is present in friendships too because people then know they can depend on each other in hard times.  When this is not there we tend to replace love with substitutes.  Physical attraction is over-emphasised, it really should be an element of an ordered and faithful relationship with another person.  Taken from what Saint John Paul II said Pope Francis reminded the gathered crowd,   we must learn ” with perseverance and consistency, the meaning of the body.”  He continued, “the call to marriage life requires accurate discernment of the quality of the relationship”, including a suitable period of preparation.   Our source of strength, to rid us of an adulterous heart and replace it with a faithful one, is to allow in into our being the fidelity of God, so can practise Christ’s fidelity.
