OUR GOSPEL SHARING TEXT FOR TODAY
Gospel, Luke 5:1-11
1 Now it happened that he was standing one day by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the crowd pressing round him listening to the word of God,
2 when he caught sight of two boats at the water’s edge. The fishermen had got out of them and were washing their nets.
3 He got into one of the boats — it was Simon’s — and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat.
4 When he had finished speaking he said to Simon, ‘Put out into deep water and pay out your nets for a catch.’
5 Simon replied, ‘Master, we worked hard all night long and caught nothing, but if you say so, I will pay out the nets.’
6 And when they had done this they netted such a huge number of fish that their nets began to tear,
7 so they signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them; when these came, they filled both boats to sinking point.
8 When Simon Peter saw this he fell at the knees of Jesus saying, ‘Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man.’
9 For he and all his companions were completely awestruck at the catch they had made;
10 so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. But Jesus said to Simon, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on it is people you will be catching.’
11 Then, bringing their boats back to land they left everything and followed him.
WHAT HAS TOUCHED ME
What had touched me in this gospel is what happened when Peter obeyed Jesus’ words
“but if you say so, I will pay out the nests.” This means if it is coming from you, I will do it. And when he did it, he had an amazing catch. This is so touching to me because it teaches me many things. In fact, this is one of my best gospels. What I learn is Jesus’ words have weight. I should listen and do what he asks me to do and I will be happy. I spend lots of time labouring and not getting desired results because I do not bring Jesus on board. The moment Jesus comes on board, results come.
Another lesson I learn is obedience to the word of God. Had Peter not obeyed, he would not have had the great catch which he had. When I obey God’s command, I reap great fruits.
Another lesson which I learn is the need to dip my net deep. Peter and his companions were fishing at the surface. When, on Jesus’ command they dipped their nets deep, they had a great catch. I learn from this to fish God’s word not superficially but deeply. When I read God’s word, I should make sure that I take time to understand it; to go deep into it. When I pray, I should pray deeply not superficially. Whatever I do, I should go deep into it. My relationship with the Lord should be deep not superficial.
I resolve today, to go deep in relationship with the Lord. To pray deeply, read the Bible deeply and give it careful thought to understand it well. And to obey the command given to me.
WORD OF LIFE
My word of life is “will’. This stands for obey. Peter told Jesus, ” I will ” and obeyed Jesus. Today, I will obey every command that Jesus gives me. If I listen to his word any time I will look for what he wants me to do and I will obey it.
God, almighty Father, thank you for today’s gospel from which I have gathered a lot. I pray for your grace to listen to your word attentively, and obey it so that I will reap the fruits that you promise. This is my humble prayer through Christ our Lord Amen!
