The pursuit of happiness

If someone were to ask you, “What should I do to become happy?” what would you advise them? Probable answers likely range from maintaining a positive outlook to doing nothing at all since you are not in control of what happens to you. Is personal effort involved in achieving happiness at all?

And how does one differentiate between happiness and joy?

Things that elicit a happy response and bring a smile to our face may be as elementary as the music that resonates with our emotions, a hug from a loved one, or even a surprising shopping discount. Everyone responds with differing impulses of emotion, and the unsuspecting customer may value the hug over the discount, while the musician may value his music over the hug. Regardless of who we are, what we feel, or how we react, happiness emerges in the everyday moments of our lives, clinging to the…

The art of mindfulness

“Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing it were different; enjoying the pleasant without holding on when it changes (which it will); being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way (which it won’t).” ~ James Baraz

In your mind, visualize yourself in a typical zone of your day-to-day life. Think of the same routes traversed every week, or perhaps every day; the moments accustomed to; the identical tasks almost robotically done. Now imagine your entire life frozen in time. Life holds a collection of obstacles intended to challenge and steer us away from our ulterior motives…but nevertheless we must do it anyway.

Even the harshest, rudest people we encounter do not incidentally end up in our lives. We learn the majority of our lessons through people we do not like, or who don’t like us. So how about we become grateful for our…
