A Fisherman’s Catch

From being a graphic designer
To a mentor
And then an author.
Fishing in unknown waters
Today I feel
Like a fisherman going out to sea.
 *
Braving the storms
Manoeuvring his boat against the waves.
Methodically casting his net.
His faith in the lighthouse
Is his constant source of strength,
Even though it’s far beyond his reach.

*

Just as the fisherman
Casts out his net in the waters
Where fish are to be caught
Then hauls it back in again
For the catch that his livelihood sought
Similar way I cast my line in the marketing world.

*

Still waters. A few ripples here and there
And then the line moves;
Slowly… jerking unsteadily at first
Then more frequently as the fish take a bite.
And like the fisherman, I take a strong hold,
Ready for the fight…

Surprise: FREE Book Download Day 31.10.16 #romance #amreading

Afternoon all!

Happy Halloween. Just stopping by to share with you that today is a free download day for my romantic suspense novel, on Amazon. Hope you enjoy, so far it’s received 5 star reviews.

Book blurb:

In A Stranger in France readers are taken on a fast paced, modern day romantic journey, that spans between the city of London, the glitz and glam of France, and the beautiful English coast in a gripping romantic story, between two complete strangers with enough suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat turning pages.

When career driven and successful thirty- two-year-old London born Kate Brown faces hard times in her marriage, she confides in her best friend Tanya Adams in Marseille southern France. Kate makes a bold move and spends two weeks in Marseille away from her husband in London. Her path crosses with tall, dark, devilishly handsome and wealthy Nicholas D’Coix. An immigrant to France from the Ivory Coast west Africa as a young boy, who turned himself around and built up an empire of wealth as a hustler and money maker, and now one of Paris’ top three entrepreneurs. In a whirlwind of sexy, lustful romance Nicholas and Kate fall in love.

Kate returns to London to a few surprises of her own, and still very much in love with Nicholas as she makes yet another bold life changing move. Touching on real life issues these two strong characters battle it out against all the odds in the name of love, across the UK and France.

Top of the Elevenses/Brunch #58

Having some seasoned Grilled Plantain with a Spinach Dip was very nice.  Memories of going to the market with my mother came flooding back.  When I first went to a market in England I was surprised at the noise or rather the shouts of the stall holders to attract customers and the battering between buyers and sellers .  It was the only thing I didn’t expect in England.  When listening to friends and family who had lived in United Kingdom or reading books and magazines I never took much notice of markets.

Surprised not alarmed though, it made me at ease to see such normality as I was used to in Ghana.

An Answer You Don’t Want

Why do you write?
What is the need to write?
Your first book didn’t sell…!
You indulged in this nonsense once,
Now I won’t back you for another…!
Bickering. Bitterness.
Isn’t that a wonderful response your spouse gives you?
When you tell him of your dream.
When did we get so good at this?
Causing each other pain.

*

Unnecessary arguments they say…
Really? Is that really so?
Nobody is interested you say.
But how much interest do you show in my work?
Mostly insensitive and defensive
That’s how they are;
Our arguments.
Now the quarrels have lulled and grievances have been aired.
But the sting and snap of your words still remain.
Etched in my soul.

*

At argument’s end
I’m left with this muddy chasm
Of your malcontent
With the memory of your uncherished words
A spontaneous outburst;
Spoken in haste and anger;
Yet each so vividly demeaning,
Supported with vehement arguments.
My canvas is the same as yours; white with a solid surface.
Made to fill with shapes and patterns of varying sizes.

*

The only difference is that
You use more logic and practicality
And I…
I use color, dreams and words.

The secret code to writing a best seller

Is there such a thing as a secret code to a best seller or is it a myth?

Well I decided to conduct some research to find answers and stumbled across some very interesting advice from various authors. The likes of Stephen King, Sylvia Day, Archer and Jockers (you get the idea).

‘An arresting opening line is crucial to ensnaring an audience’

I agree, absolutely spot on, it is the opening of the book and even first line which captures or ensnares the audience. Personally for me; the opening of a book is a deciding factor whether I will read further on or not. I often give the author many opportunities before I finally decide to abandon a book(which is pretty much towards the end of it).

Whilst Stephen King elaborates a little;

‘You should focus not on plot but situation, the most interesting of which can be expressed as a ‘what-if?’ question. Go easy on the research, beware of dialogue, and remember that people love reading about work. “God knows why but they do”.

Work, hmm, maybe it’s because they would like to relate to it in a way(I think).

Another interesting piece of advice by one of the authors Jeffery Archer;

 ‘Just make sure the reader has to turn each page, desperate to find out what happens next. It’s that easy’ – Jeffrey Archer

We all have been there, enjoyed good books and still do, where we are eager to find out, what happens next, curiosity doesn’t just kill the cat, it pretty much kills us too.

Enjoy!

Books

Smell so refreshing, yet old at the same time. Collated in a row for the amusement of the eyes; ‘beauty is in the eyes of the beholder’ they say; yet wishing they were all mine.

Feel so soft, so gentle, yet powerful at the same time, ink on the pages ensure a new excitement, new journey, a new vision or frame of mind.

Caressing the books gently, lifting one at a time, which can I choose to take home to be mine.

Mind struggles to narrow for one or two; looking eagerly from left to right, hoping, searching; for clues.

Heart sinks at the thought of abandoning any, I gaze, I adore, incase I lose interest in any, as time ticks away; I conclude, clutching the entire bundle, reassuring that it’s the right thing to do.

Walking away with my new collection, eager to seep through, I won’t buy anymore I assure myself, it was the best thing to do.

For all the book lovers.
