Spiritual Happiness

Much is written about joy in the Bible. Jesus spoke of being joyful unto His Father, later transcribed to, “Be joyful unto the Lord.” As we face disillusions and fears, of either, we endure many hardships. I, too, have these familiar symptoms, but God always remains constant in my mind. These words resonate in my mind, “Bring Me your woes and do not worry for I will help you with your inspirational battles.”

Unforeseen problems arise in the worldly pressures and obligations that meet us, not greet us, at every doorstep. Life, sometimes, can appear to be short-lived… unless your faith asks God for a special blessing and miracle. Some have experienced God at His best as unfortunate events end with a silver lining.

I often write of my sordid past life, but I glance back at those times and realize God intervened in my life. Today’s blog, however, is not about me, but the one I’m closest to, my wife. This young, vibrant, and outgoing woman, plagued with a virtue of grief and sadness in the past few months, almost lost her life in a car accident twenty-five years ago. The doctors just diagnosed her with heart failure as a repercussion of the injuries.

In disbelief, we took part in many tests and things seemed questionable, but nevertheless, okay… until the last test screening. It confirmed her life might be terminal. I can’t say how one prepares to die, except to “live life like there’s no tomorrow”… and so we did, in apprehension. With no other choice, I fought for the spiritual happiness of both of us. I walked on pins and needles, often hearing the crunch of eggshells. I was too frightened to speak much, so I stayed in constant prayer. Following my blog called Faith for Two, I knew only God would see us through this dilemma.

Matthew 6:25-27

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

The day arrived for her medical procedure, and hopefully, it would not become an open-heart decision. I watched the love of my life that morning, and I observed her quietly whispering, “Goodbye, mommy loves you” to her favorite parrot of twenty-seven years. I read her last words, “No food or drink after midnight,” as she prepared herself for a procedure which could end her life. It would have been easier to move a mountain than to keep her spirits positive. I maintained my strong convictions and stayed where I knew God wanted me to be – in prayer. Only my Lord Jesus could restore that which would destroy her many years ago.

In the lobby, in front of the doors to the operating room, I kissed her goodbye. Keeping up our spiritual happiness, I told her,” I’ll see you for lunch.” With tears in her eyes, we prayed it was not our last forever kiss. I needed to go to God! Father bless her and keep her in your arms, my dear Lord.

The wait seemed like an eternity. I took a seat beside a minister, and we shared our own hearts. The door at last opened, and a doctor in scrubs called out my name, “BICKS.” He took me into a quiet room and invited me to sit beside him on the couch. I had my faith until the moment he elected to move closer to me.

“She’s all clear, Mr. Bicks,” he said. “We found no blockages, and she’s as good as new.” My sweet love, who worried for five months of dying, was born again to the likeness of the sweet, little girl I remembered thirty-two years ago. She will live! Thank You, Jesus!

A curious thought crossed my mind. Two weeks ago, the cardiologist saw the blockage in a scan, and now it doesn’t exist!? Was this one of God’s miracles? You decide…

It has been six days now, and I see a glow where worry over-shadowed her face. A renewed life called spiritual happiness far exceeds a biblical joy. Saved by grace, quite literally, His miracle child is born again. There is no greater gift than the gift of life; and when death comes calling, defying Satan’s force is a miracle!

Living in a spiritual realm of happiness, where no pressure or problems exist, can be conquered when we reach out in faith. A great example of this in the bible was the story of Jesus feeding 5,000 people on five loaves of bread and two fish (Matthew 14:15-21 and Luke 9:12-17). It is called the marvel of God’s healing hands, just as He did to my wife.

We read the miraculous stories of defying doctors’ diagnoses, but until it happens to you, we shun it with some other explanation. The Lord’s greatest feat was saving my wife’s life, and not once but twice; she put her heart and soul close enough for Him to heal her with His touch.

May I suggest we armor ourselves in prayer each morning to maintain spiritual happiness? Don’t identify with suffering, loss, or sickness. Remain steadfast in our Lord’s word, and He will calm every facet of your life. Today, my wife and I wake with a smile and a good-morning kiss, for God came to bless us with another anointed day. Our spiritual happiness is more than we ever asked for, and it is all because we serve our Almighty Savior.

The Hardest Thing To Do Is… Listen

We found our way around the yachts parked in their cradles. An empty spot was right next to the dock. We quietly got ready to embark, and the cloudless skies made us wonder how far off heaven was from the pier. The snoozing seagulls perched on the post tops. As we set sail, the gentle breeze bellowed the fabric, and God became our propulsion. The shores of the water looked so endless. It was a beautiful Saturday morning, and no place would I’d rather be than with my love and God at the helm. He created this perfect world of pristine water, and all we had to do was sit and watch Him work.

Sometimes it is difficult to accept God is with us day in and day out. Just as sailing into the open blue, we do not realize we are always at His mercy. Many times our sails luff and we pray as though we ran aground. As hard as life is, even doctors can do little to relieve discomfort. In the distress of my wife’s health, I’m left standing in a vacuum for everywhere I look, I see the remnants of the doctor’s aura.

So, I turn to God and ask Him if He has a minute. The hardest thing to do is… listen and wait for His messages. Our faith is only part of the process. Listening for His answers and reacting accordingly is the trick, so we must have a seeking heart. We should talk to Him as though he is a brother and reveal our frustrations, fears, and doubts. God will teach us how to recognize the difference between His voice and just our thoughts.

Find a location to be with Christ and His great mercy. The Lord always has a place open to sit with me, especially on this endless journey my wife and I have encountered today. I wish I could run away and take her sailing to the place called heaven, but it’s not time yet. God gave us responsibilities we must partake and fulfill. Instead,  I will sit with God and try to understand what advice I need to listen to and praise His great gifts. He united the two of us for some much-needed healing in our difficult road of life. So, I will carry her in every way I can possible. In His strength, we will travel as far as the Lord’s work will need us to go for He isn’t done with either of us yet.

The hardest thing to do is listen for God’s words, but if you acknowledge His involvement in your life, you will always recognize His heaven sent voice. Praise God! It’s our intimate relationship with Him that counts.

Miracles, My Love, Lie at the Foot of the Rainbow

The shadows lingered from a restless night, but I tried to be positive as God’s light rejuvenated my soul. I listened quietly as my wife dreamed, and I tried to adjust myself to fit into her position. I kissed her soothing body and prayed over her tragic health news this week. Sometimes in life, you wish you could put the world in reverse and take back past mistakes of bad decisions. We wasted too many years apart before finding each other again. Now, I’m left with little time to make up for my stupidity, and guilt haunts the “what if” category.

I’m reminded, reverently, we live our lives in God’s perfect timing. Our past life experiences are only to prepare us for the future. I crawled out of the covers. It was a new day, and the sun blessed the flowers; the birds chirped, and that which lied upon God’s planet came to His glory. I would be a speck of smudge on the earth’s surface if it weren’t for my faith. All things happen for a reason, and it is only God’s choice. I try to stay strong while our friends rally around us to rescue the brokenness of my will. It’s like kids on a little league team – everyone jumps out of the dugout and runs to help their fallen comrade. It’s a wonderful feeling when you’re lying face down in the dirt, and the whole team arrives to lift you out of the pain.

Tears have grown now as my appreciation outweighs the love which continues to pour into us. How can I sincerely thank all our friends, family, and followers, except to pray God’s glory will shine on their kindness? The Lord watches over His flock, no matter the situation. The sheep are gathered in herds, waiting to be fed once again. Christ, our Shephard will feed the hungry who are gathered in His name.

But, thoughts turn to my beloved. I find my strength in God, for I must be a pillar for her to lean on in this time of distress. So, I take her hand to rededicate, before God, my deepest love for her. I pray, in the name of Jesus, I will give her my all for His love is all we need now. We will walk together in the valley of the elms and take refuge in God’s shade. Our mighty Savior will bring us through this, just like our many other scenarios. Miracles, my love, lie at the foot of the rainbow. ~~www.danabicksauthor.com~~

Religious Persecution

Religious persecution is a never-ending battle. Innocent Christians are crucified every day in the name of God for believing in a higher way of life. On our home turf, distance protects us; yet examples around the world appear in our own living room. If only everyone would come to terms with God’s peace! My heart remains in remorse over the wrong direction we are heading today. But, amongst these times of terror, the steadfast still walk with Jesus to praise and spread the Lord’s words of hope. Blessed be the faithful!

Some may not be aware my wife did missionary work in Guinea, West Africa for the International Mission Board. Her humanitarian efforts served the Susu tribes where they dug wells for fresh water. She also held a Vacation Bible School for pre-school children in the capital city of Conakry. Her living arrangement was in a compound enclosed with a fifteen-foot cement wall and broken bottles placed on top for safety. Two security guards stood guard twenty-four hours a day. Amidst the 110 degree weather, lack of fresh running water, recurring power outages, illness from vaccine shots, and contaminated foods, she and her group forged onward; it was necessary for the Islamists to know God loves everyone.

My wife and aides meeting town people of Conakry
Teaching Susu tribes how to use their new wells

But, months of pre-planning and training was mandatory before she could enter Africa. The World Mission Boards warns missionaries to be careful who you speak to, not to look militants in the eye, and to dress in public as one of the crowd. They could not take for granted the deep commitment the Soussou had to their own religion. Not everyone finds peace in the spirit of Christian voodoo where God is the last word. Amid the incomprehension of entering a Third World country, she boarded an airplane with a round-trip ticket and the church’s prayer for her safe return. God bless our missionaries!

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. (1 Peter 2:12)

By God’s mercy, my wife was one of the lucky few to serve and leave Africa without incident. The internet is filled with stories of those murdered in the hands of the Peace Corps and other religious affiliations. It is obvious Christians still walk, today, in the suffering Christ paid for our sins. China and Pakistan, for example, recently suffered mass genocides and burnings of their churches. Bangladesh murders secular activists and Christians, more or less with impunity. Statistics reveal North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Africa, Iraq, and Syria persecute Christians more than any other faith group. Making matters worse, governments in the West and the UN do not offer emergency help to victims.

With the influx of Middle Eastern immigrants and other foreigners into the United States, the religious tide is shifting dramatically here too. Bibles, crosses, and our churches are burned; they ban even Christmas trees and greeting cards in some areas. I wonder what Jesus would think if He walked our world today?

In biblical days, Jesus also suffered much religious persecution. He toured a radius of forty miles around Nazareth preaching His Father’s word and often hid in different lands for His protection. Unlike my wife, who stayed behind a cement wall, His temporary home was in a cave or the middle of a desert. But as in today’s times, very few people believed He was the Messiah, only those who witnessed His miracles. What words or actions does one need to see to prove God really exists? It’s not about color or creed, but receiving the grand prize – eternal life in heaven!

To the families who lost loved ones in the oppression of trusting in God’s greatness, have faith knowing persecution and true Christianity are inseparable. Jesus died on the cross for our sins – even for those who denounced His existence. Missionaries and all other Christians must realize God warns His righteous saints they will be persecuted for believing in Him.

“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:10-12)

Have solace for your loved ones, and others who served the Lord, and believe in His name because they will be forever in His presence. If I had to lose my life for someone, let it be for Jesus! It would not be in vain for mercy reigns over ignorance! For two thousand years, believers have fought the war of standing up for God. Many procrastinate changing their life’s sins for the anticipation of the return of Christ Jesus. With the love the Lord placed in my heart, I bleed for those who choose not to concede before they die. Fathers, mothers, sisters and sons, Christ sent you a personal invitation to live in heaven with Him. What are you waiting for? It’s in you! Open your eyes and listen to your soul. Let the books of the Gospel lead your spirit for they are not fiction but the genealogy of your life.

INERTIA

Certain words have such a profound meaning in life. At times they even apply to a holy line of thoughts.

For example, Sir Isaac Newton determined the law of gravity – a body at rest remains at rest. He claimed a mass continues to move until it meets an opposing force causing its speed or direction to change. This philosopher who laid a foundation for our scientific era believed he was put on earth to decode the word of God in scriptures and the book of nature. But, Christ proved Newton’s theory of law, called inertia, could be slightly incorrect within the Christian realm. A body which proceeds in a straight line with the Lord as our momentum, regardless of an opposing force, creates unstoppable energy; a resistance to change direction is impossible.

The big question is where is your inertia? Are you perpetually moving toward Christ, or does your inertia lay dormant as winter in a tundra? Are you the body at rest, remaining rested? God is an unmatched strength and best described as the driving force against inertia. He put our world in a spinning motion. If you allow Him into your heart, you too will always move in the direction He set forth for you.

Reflecting on these words, have you ever wondered why rejoice is the next word after reject in the dictionary? It is because rejection in life is natural, a worldly occurrence, but Christians strive to be better; we rejoice in the momentum of beating inertia. Faith is a fuel which proceeds forward, heading toward salvation. It can overpower Satan’s inert forces if we pray and remain steadfast in God’s love. Remember, the absence of energy is nothingness – no life at all, so we must find it to travel onward.

To prove my theory, let us examine those with spiritual laziness. Do you come home from work and sit at the computer playing games or chatting on social media? Did you pick up your Bible at all to study it? How many of you make excuses why you do not have time to spend with God? Those who’s inertia stagnates will surely go astray, especially in tough times. Be prepared to challenge Sir Isaac Newton’s theory of inertia and fuel up in God’s written Word.

We serve a marvelous Father! Through flood, fires, and wars on earth, God remains a viable entity to fight off evil. He is a force who will bring you wonders inconceivable to the naked eye. If we keep the Lord’s commandments, we will save our soul and find fulfillment in life. But the one who is careless or despises His way will perish forever.

God Howls

http://www.danabicksauthor.com

God howls calling all His children to come sit and comprehend His words. But, most of the younger generation pays little attention. The innocent become caught up in a triangle of apprehension while trying to cope with the ways of the world. Do they not know the Ten Commandments are a guideline for spiritual development – a oneness in God? This is an age of crime, adultery, hatred, and dishonesty; yet I want to share a positive story about a loved one who, amid his surroundings, God silently spoke to him.

This young man, bless his heart, lived a hard life. He fought his way through the damnation of a city’s streets. Along the road of hard knocks, he trudged a lost path of following the wrong crowd and perhaps engaging in activities less than moral. As a result, many disrespected him along with the family and friends who once comforted him. It’s a sad state of affairs but a prevalent trend for most youngsters today. One day, though, his situation changed in a matter of minutes.

Now married and struggling to support a household, he worked a blue-collar job. He observed stealing and lying by employees in his workplace, and a few even planned to frame him for the theft. Soon God spoke to this young man’s heart. Stealing was not only illegal and a dead-end street, but against the seventh Commandment which addresses honesty and truthfulness.

The changed man, (it is not essential to reveal his name), resolved himself to approach management about the situation. Kids will be kids, but God touched this one. His world made a huge turn after the pivotal moment of telling the truth to his company. It’s been two years since this incident, and with God’s continued blessings, he will continue his course up the corporate ladder!

See, God has a way of creeping into our lives when we least suspect it. He plants seeds in our soul and they whisper messages to our subconscious minds. Oddly enough, I don’t think this child has put two-and-two together yet for he still struggles mentally with past mistakes. Someday, however, he will connect the dots and realize it was God who saved him from an ultimate disaster and even prison.

Today, it is my greatest pleasure to watch this young man blossom into a person with great character, while holding God’s hand. He is one of God’s chosen children, selected to be an example to many others who walk a crooked line looking for their next tragic fix. When faith is lost, so too, are God’s blessings.

How can we turn this around? The first step is to become a believer again by reading the Scriptures and becoming re-familiarized with God’s Word. It requires obedience and repentance through prayer. Absorb the Ten Commandments all over again. Parents must pray for their child to discern God’s voice.

This generation must understand their wicked ways has a ring leader named Satan. They should realize the confusion and feelings of anger stem from Satan’s presence.  If only they would listen to their inner voice when they know something doesn’t feel right because it is the Holy Spirit speaking in their ear. God howls to them through the blackness for he hates the evil penetrating their being.

Let us pray today for our younger generations –

BEGINNING FEBRUARY 3RD! More information coming soon –

“Me, Myself, and I”

A hanging photograph reflects my life, or does it? The sun’s glare creates a haze over the frame of remembrance for it looks a little vague. Faintly in the distance, reflections of my life are reduced now to an eight by ten. Who am I? I think I am nothing but a picture sitting on a shelf. My story is the same as yours – a few captured moments of smiles. The rest of your breath is consumed in some kind of drama or struggle.

I see our moments posing for the camera, but no one knows what life is like when the cameras are not rolling, right? After a lot of thought, I’ve narrowed it down… life is like moving the forest. It’s difficult at best. We must start by asking for a helping hand.

So, today, I asked the Lord to make me strong and heal my conscious mind. I started the morning in prayer as there’s no one else who can help with my struggles, except “me, myself, and I.” But suddenly, I realized the “I” in this cliché is God, not me! Yes, God is always with each of us, even in the most obscure picture of life. The selfies we surround ourselves with will only become complete after we learn it’s God who brings us to the here and now.

Subsequently, I decided to investigate the old cliché a little further. Who is me in “me, myself, and I?” I see it explicitly – me is the body, Christ’s body!

Myself is the spirit of the Holy Ghost lying deep within our soul.

The I is our wonderful and loving God, ever present in all our circumstances.

God blesses us with life, hope, and truth and the power to go forward, moving the forest we call life. The kingdom of God was born within you! God bless!

“Failure Is Not An Option”

Failure Is Not An Option cover

“With a tear in his eye and a broken voice reflecting his soul, no man should ever have to crawl out of the depths of that which he has found himself in.” ~~Dana Bicks~~

Steady at the helm, I insisted, and let God control your heading. His knuckles were white from gripping the wheel. He looked at me with tears brimming in his sad eyes, and the bitterness flowed. He told me, “Failure is not an option.”

With all the perseverance of a giant of a man, this little five foot six gentleman held on while a hurricane blew into his personal domain. An alcoholic with five children to feed, and a wife who deserted him, this gentle soul finally came face-to-face with the only one he did not plan on – God. He hides his habit in a garage full of memories where obligations wear tears on his collar. Robert knows who he is facing now.

Failure Is Not An Option Pic 2

This man, who tries to escape reality through alcohol, almost died at the hands of a driver who crossed over the yellow lines. Within a year of the horrid accident, he found himself crippled, perhaps never to walk again. Today, he stares into the face of the only man he didn’t expect to meet, God, our Father, and in of all places, his garage. It’s not what I’d call a church, but he was eyeball to eyeball. With schedules and activities for five kids still in school, my friend finds God staring at him while he pours himself, yet, one more.

God grabbed him by the collar and pushed him against the wall. He looked Robert in the eyes and asked him a straightforward question.” What means more to you? The bottle or the boys and that sweet little girl?” Tears from a broken father flowed as my friend understood now, God really existed. He is always watching our every move. There’s no hiding from Him! Even if you lie to your loved ones and yourself, God still sees the actions of the guilty.

Failure Is Not An Option Pic 3.jpg

I’ve never been in such a predicament, so it’s hard to relate to on many levels. I could only hug this dear friend and comfort him. My friends, God continually watches and listens to our spirit. He watches over the conscious mind when sickness and sin combine as one. So, I must ask then, if weakness is your virtue, then why is God not an option?

You see, so many live their life from within their mind. Reality is merely a temporary state of being. But, God will not help those not willing to reach out to Him. So, let the words, “Failure is not an option,” be your motto as you struggle to find your path to heaven. Don’t you know His greatest accomplishments can be built on our failures?

Failure Is Not An Option Pic 1

My friend lost a twenty-one-year career, wrecked two vehicles, and later discovered his marriage wasn’t as solid as he thought. We must come to grips with reality as God gives you back the helm. Will you take the wheel and hold the course God has for you? Or will you run with the wind to escape the challenges? Eventually, you must face our Father. Let failure not be an option for you too!

Godspeed Robert, we all love you!

If Satan Steals Your Thunder

If Satan Steals Your Thunder cover

In the quiet, a reverence silently proclaims a mysterious night. The darkness is haunting as the glimmering lightning echoes in the heavens. Every breath you take cuts like a knife. Alone, you contemplate, what if Satan steals your thunder? Does God really hear my thoughts or is Satan interrupting the prayers?? More questions than answers plague your spirit. Your conscience decides it’s time to play games. You wonder if this direction in life is what you want or could there be something better.

You can never predict where, when or how God wants you. There are lessons only God plans and sometimes preparations we make for ourselves are unwarranted. You can’t predict your life, but you can be ready if God wants to anoint you to serve His kingdom here on Earth.

Living in this world is a war zone headed up by Satan. The evil one rages the battlegrounds in our head’s. He’s deceitful and wants to murder us with his lies. Life looks so confusing when God’s gifts are clouded over, doesn’t it? But as the lightning creeps closer, God calls us nearer as Satan is trying to steal your thunder.

If Satan Steals Your Thunder verse

You must lie in state and pray. Ask God to receive your spirit and abolish the satanic strongholds that imprison your soul. Allow your emotions to fill with the Holy Spirit. Your harmony will beacon in the still of the dark. God is mankind’s only power, and Satan will run like rain into the storm sewer. Make no place in your heart for filthy water.

The downpour turns to a cymbal-sounding sprinkle. God tames the savageness of Satan once again and reminds him the power of the world is in His hands. You stood firm in faith!

Graciously, we drift off to sleep while something calms our hearts, and the stolen thunder is replaced with peace. God is always with you even if Satan steals your thunder.

We Work For God

We Work for God cover

The blackest of clouds stalk the night’s evening sunset. A phone call interrupts my joy of dreams. The update took precedence for a mother lost her young son to the practicing world of medicine. God forbid the professional caretakers who made the misdiagnosis! Her innocent child died of a curable cancer at the tender age of twenty-six. But, God anoints those who stay in prayer when questioning the validity of why He allows children to die young.

So full of mixed emotions at the devastating news, it’s ironic God brings my home and future so much love, and making Him happy is a priority. My wife and I share the miracles God gives us every day. But, it is times such as this, working for God is difficult… consoling the less fortunate, reflecting with the very ill, and nights spent reminiscing memories of those who passed.

In the gloomy daylight, we put our galoshes on and troop through the storms along with high expectations of a better tomorrow. God willing, there will be a rainbow at the end of the heavy rains. We become an armored troubadour on tough days, preparing to meet the tidal wave of life. So, let us rejoice!

We Work for God rainbow

It is not known to us, yet, why death occurs at any age. But, it’s safe to assume when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, God cursed the ground of humans on earth. The Tree of Life fell prey to sin, and none are indestructible, including our offspring. A lesson to learn – there is nothing of this world we can count on for true contentment. Instead, we must look to God for our ultimate and eternal fulfillment. We should worship and trust in Him who is wiser than we are, knowing our final rewards are in heaven.

Sworn to work for God, I pray our faith waves like Old Glory in the winds of the stormy seas. Batten down the hatches from Satan’s wild, destructive forces which seep through the cracks as we proceed on our current course. Remember your faith as you cross life’s treacherous roads and stay humble.

God loves each one of us. So, let us unite when the fear of catastrophic winds attack us. As Christians, resist temptations when Satan closes in, and restore love in each other and our Lord. We work for God. Be that pillar under His wings.
